Cupboard Paintings

The past art of Western culture shapes what we create today, and how we view or interpret the world. My paintings seek to explore this shaping of the present by the past. I utilize the materials of traditional painting, such as oil paint on wood and canvas, but I push the materials into sculptural dimensions. These paintings are cupboards. On the cupboard doors I have reworked historical paintings. The historical image on the outside then shapes the subject and the pose of the contemporary three-dimensional form on the inside. Through opening the cupboard doors, a viewer can go beyond the traditional ways of looking at a painting, by actually interacting with it. By manipulating the doors, the viewer has the opportunity to combine the past with the present, to make one image of the two, and to be included in the creative process. |
